Too Afraid to Ask How to Tie your BJJ Belt?
If you are new to BJJ, You are a Coach or simply looking to learn something new, this article is for you!
How to tight your belt is a question we all had when we first started in jiu-jitsu but we were probably too afraid to ask, don’t worry you are not alone, we all went through that.
I did not learn how to tie a belt until I was a blue belt (mainly because I did grappling),
You can imagine how confused and weird I felt when I asked my instructor to teach me once I started training in the Gi.
The BJJ Belt you Choose Matters!
When choosing a BJJ Belt, the first instinct is to get the most affordable one right? There are many things to consider before making a decision,
Don’t buy just any belt just because it is cheap, after all, you will use it for at least a few years.
Remember to buy a belt in the same size as your BJJ Gi,
However, if you have a little extra weight around the waist, you might want to consider buying a larger size belt than the Gi you are wearing.
Your BJJ Belt should be sticking out around 20 cm on both sides of the knot in your belt, no more.
Step By Step
You Can Play this Audio while you see the images, it will make it more clear.
Step 1
Measure your BJJ Belt and fold it in half exactly in the middle, you want to make sure both ends are the same height.
Step 2
Place the middle of your BJJ Belt in the middle of your waist
Step 3
Wrap it around your belt, cross it over your back
Step 4
Measure that both ends in the front are the same length, if not, wiggle the belt until they are.
Step 5
Cross one of the ends over the other one making an “X”
Step 6
Pass the side ON TOP, UNDER the loop around your waist (“X”) so it is on top, tighten and adjust comfortably
Step 7
Pass the side ON TOP, UNDER the loop around your waist (“X”) so it is on top, tighten and adjust comfortably
Step 8
Create a knot by inserting the end ON TOP through the hole.

Tighten and Adjust Knot and you are DONE!
